Nick Ansell says there’s no chance Melbourne Victory will coast through their final regular season match at home to Central Coast on Sunday.
Behind the scenes, the club may be putting the champagne on ice to celebrate winning the Premier’s Plate, but Ansell says there’s no way coach Kevin Muscat would allow the players to believe the hype.
Only a final-day disaster would prevent Victory from winning the premiership. To snatch it from their grasp, second-placed Sydney FC would need a big win earlier in the day away to Wellington Phoenix and then see Victory slip up against the Mariners.
Central Coast will be determined to send retiring skipper John Hutchinson out as a winner in his 229th and final A-League match, so Victory know the visitors won’t roll over at AAMI Park.
The fact they lost their last home game 1-0 to bottom side Newcastle Jets will also serve as a reminder to Muscat’s players that they have to be ruthless.
Ansell said: “We’re not thinking as if it’s all over – definitely not. All the boys are really happy with the position we’ve got ourselves in and we’re really focused on this week’s game.
“We’re not going to let it slip up at all. You never know what might happen in football and we’re not going to go out on the weekend thinking we’ve already got the Premier’s Plate sewn up.”
The 21-year-old added: “I think it’s pretty obvious to all of us that we’re all on the same page. ‘Musky’ has had a word to keep everyone focused, but no-one’s straying; all we’re thinking about is getting the three points.”
Victory are 1.33 to beat the Mariners, who are 8.00 with the draw 5.25.
