Coach Graham Arnold was unhappy with the way Sydney FC “switched off” and allowed Brisbane Roar back into the game before winning 5-4 at Allianz Stadium.
The three points should have been in the bag at 4-1 when marquee striker Marc Janko departed to a standing ovation after netting a hat-trick and setting an A-League record.
Arnold substituted the Austrian with 13 minutes left after he had become the first player in the competition’s history to score in seven consecutive matches.
Brisbane scored twice in the space of four minutes, though, threatening to rescue a point that would have denied the Sky Blues second spot in the table.
It took another goal, from Alex Brosque, to finally finish off the game a minute from time – though the Roar then had the last word when Dimitri Petratos scored.
Sydney, who are 4.33 to win the Grand Final, have scored 25 goals in their seven games since the Asian Cup break, but Arnold doesn’t want them to keep having to score to make up for conceding goals.
“If you’re up 4-1, go for 5-1, don’t be happy to sit on 4-1. If it gets to 5-1, go for 6-1; that’s what a top team does and that’s stuff that we have to work on,” he said.
“We’ve got to score more goals than the opposition do if we’re going to defend like that. As I just said, you can play for 75 to 80 minutes like we did and the stats showed they had five shots on goals… and then we switched off.
“Whether that’s complacency or concentration or was it because we took the tempo out of the game in midfield that players just started thinking it was game over? The game’s never over until the final whistle.”
The Sky Blues extended their unbeaten run to nine games as Janko took his tally for the season to 16, beating the previous club record of 15 set by Alessandro Del Piero.
Sydney FC are 1.90 to win their next game against Melbourne City, who are 3.80 with the draw 3.60.
