Sydney FC coach Graham Arnold reckons his side’s form and the venue for next weekend’s Grand Final are both factors in the Sky Blues’ favour.
Arnold saw his team beat Adelaide United 4-1 at Allianz Stadium in the second of the semi-finals, 24 hours after Melbourne Victory had booked their own place in the decider with a three-goal win over Melbourne City.
There is little to choose between the Grand Finalists, based on their league position or their previous meetings this season.
From 3rd January to today, we’re the best team in the league.
Sydney finished in second place in the final league table, just three points behind Kevin Muscat’s team, and all three of the clashes between the pair ended all-square.
Sydney FC are 2.20 to win the Grand Final, with Victory 1.66.
While Victory will be happy to host the final at AAMI Park, Arnold insists the Sky Blues won’t mind playing there. Both the MCG and Etihad Stadium are unavailable for the game so it will be played at the third-largest venue in the city in front of less than 30,000 fans.
“The good thing about that is there’s only going to be 25,000 people there, there won’t be 55,000 so it should not be too daunting down there,” said the Sydney coach.
Arnold says he is “extremely confident” of winning the championship, based on his team’s excellent away record – they were unbeaten on the road throughout the season – and their record since the Asian Cup break.
“From 3rd January to today, we’re the best team in the league. Since the Asian Cup I think it’s 41 goals we’ve scored in 14 games and we’re getting better and better,” he argued.
“That’s the belief I have and the stats will show you that since Christmas we’ve got four or five points more than Melbourne Victory. So we’ve got to go down confident and especially our away form is outstanding, so we’ll be extremely confident.”
Sydney are 3.00 to win the game inside 90 minutes.
