The brilliance of Brandon Borrello paid off for the second time in five days as Brisbane Roar beat Western Sydney Wanderers 1-0 at Suncorp Stadium.

The man whose early goal in Japan earned the Roar their maiden Asian Champions League victory in midweek against Urawa Red Diamonds sunk Wanderers in a rematch of last season’s Grand Final.

He weaved through the visitors’ defence before slamming the ball past Dean Bouzanis into the far corner eight minutes into the second half.

He’s a player you want to take off earlier because he runs and runs and he works so hard. You know he needs to rest but he’s always dangerous with his runs.

It was enough to secure the points and, allied to Melbourne City’s defeat to Central Coast, pushed Brisbane back into the top six. The Roar are 15.00 to win the Grand Final.

Coach Frans Thijssen said of Borrello: “He’s a player you want to take off earlier because he runs and runs and he works so hard. You know he needs to rest but he’s always dangerous with his runs.

“And he makes the goal again and you’re happy for him. When you score two games in the row, he gets more confidence, and he’ll be one of the players who scores goals for us in the next 10 games.”

Borrello was unlucky not to score a second when he went through with just Bouzanis to beat but dinked the ball just too high and clipped the bar.

Brisbane had the better chances in the match, but almost saw two points disappear in injury time when Tomi Juric unleashed a shot from the right-hand side of the area that bounced down off the underside of the crossbar and onto the line.

The fact that Wanderers were almost capable of stealing a point at the death underlined Thijssen’s point to his players at the interval.

The Roar coach, whose side are 1.57 to finish in the top six, revealed: “I said at half-time we have to win because we need the points, forget about being tired. In the end they kept going till the last second, and they battled.”
