Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque admits he has been tempted to call time on his career, but has been urged to play on next season.
The 31-year-old has told coach Graham Arnold he would understand if he felt it was time for him to make way for a younger player.
The Sky Blues have secured their spot – at least in the qualifying round – in next year’s Asian Champions League, though, so the lure of featuring in that competition is likely to see him play on.
Brosque is on a two-year deal as the club’s Australian marquee, and has been in a rich vein of form for Arnold’s side, who are 3.75 to win the Grand Final, with four goals in his last two games.
“I don’t want to be a player that overstays his welcome,” he said. “If I’m doing that then I don’t want to stop the development of a younger player who might be coming through and doing well.”
He added: “I had thought about it (retiring). No matter what, at the end of the season I was always going to sit down and evaluate the season with my performances, and sit down with Arnie as well and see what he thought and what he thinks of me going forward another year.
“But, having spoken to a few people and family as well, I definitely think that with the Asian Champions League as well coming up and just me in the sort of form where I’m enjoying my football, it would be a pretty silly decision.”
Only four points separate the top four in the table, with Perth and Wellington just a point behind the Sky Blues.
Because the Phoenix are not classed as an Asian club and Perth have been banned from the finals, however, Sydney already have the second ACL qualifying spot in the bag.
They could still win the premiership if they win away to Wellington on Sunday and Melbourne Victory lose at home to Central Coast, though there would have to be a seven-goal swing their way for them to edge Kevin Muscat’s side on goal difference.
Sydney FC are 2.70 to beat the Phoenix, who are 2.50, with the draw 3.40.
