Midfielder Zenon Caravella is considering giving up his senior career for the second time, after Newcastle Jets told him he will not be offered a new contract for next season.

Caravella may have played his last game for the Jets, as he picked up an ankle injury in the 2-0 home defeat to Perth Glory at the start of the month and will miss his second consecutive game when they host Sydney FC on Friday.

I’m not ruling out continuing in the A-League.

Zenon Caravella.

The Jets are 6.00 to beat Sydney FC, who are 1.44 with the draw 4.75.

Newcastle released a statement saying he would be considered for their final round clash against Brisbane Roar on 24th April if he is fit. But he won’t be retained beyond the end of the season as the Jets continue to overhaul their squad.

Caravella asked to be released by the club last June, so he could return to his hometown of Cairns and help run the family business as well as establish a soccer training school.

He changed his mind four months later, returning to the Jets and going on to play 20 games this season. The former Adelaide United club champion said he had received offers from two A-League clubs but both would require him to move from NSW.

He said: “I’m not ruling out continuing in the A-League but I am definitely thinking very hard about making a permanent move back home to [Far North Queensland] to build my coaching academy.

“But if I do quit football at the highest level I can say I’ve had a fantastic 15 years of doing what I love for a living. I’ve won a few trophies and played in the Asian Champions League, so I can’t complain.

“But even though I only just turned 32 and still think I’ve got a lot to offer, I might be ready for some normality as well.”

The Jets, who have seen 11 players leave the club this season, are two points clear of Western Sydney Wanderers in their battle to avoid the wooden spoon.

Newcastle are 7.00 to beat Sydney FC by a one-goal margin.
