Graham Arnold has urged his Sydney FC side to “get back on their bikes” and forget about Friday’s record-busting home defeat to Melbourne City.
The Sky Blues, who are 5.00 to win the Grand Final, went looking to set a new club mark of 10 games without defeat but lost 1-0 to James Brown’s goal nine minutes from time.
It cost them the chance to take over at the top of the league, but with so many teams having so much to play for over the rest of the season Arnold is sure there will be any number of twists and turns.
Sydney were out of luck, hitting the woodwork three times at Allianz Stadium and being denied what looked a legitimate penalty when A-League leading scorer Marc Janko went down in the penalty area.
“We have to get back on the bike after a fantastic nine weeks,” said Arnold. “We’ve scored a lot of goals and even against Melbourne City the performance was good but we just didn’t score the goals we have in recent weeks.
“I won’t lose too much sleep over it. If you drop off in concentration at all, the A-League is a competition where anyone can win. So maybe this is a kick up the backside.”
The Sky Blues face a tough series of games in the run-in, none more difficult than next weekend’s trip to leaders Wellington Phoenix where they will be without 16-goal Janko through international duty.
Sydney FC are 2.62 to beat the Phoenix, who are 2.37, with the draw 3.40.
Four of their remaining matches are against fellow title contenders, and they have to go to Wellington twice as well as travelling to long-time league leaders Perth Glory.
