Melbourne City aim to continue their impressive record at AAMI Park when they take on former leaders Wellington Phoenix in their final home match of the season.
A place in the finals for just the second time in their history beckons for John van ‘t Schip’s side if they can inflict a third-straight defeat on the Phoenix.
We have done okay so far, but we have got three finals to play.
City’s success this season has come on the back of their dominance at home, where they have not been beaten since 22nd November.
Six wins and two draws since that time have helped the club – who finished bottom of the table last year as Melbourne Heart – build confidence, says skipper Patrick Kisnorbo.
“We have been working very hard on consistency and belief. They are two big things we have tried to improve,” said Kisnorbo.
“At the moment it’s helping us, but there’s no point in doing it for four games, we need to be doing it for seasons.”
City are unbeaten in their last four games, but having played their last two matches against teams outside the Finals Series places, they must finish off with three in a row against premiership contenders.
After taking on Wellington on Sunday, where they are 1.85, they travel to Perth Glory and Adelaide United.
“We have done okay so far, but we have got three finals (to play),” said Kisnorbo. “We want to get the points but it’s a hard task. Wellington have come off two bad results, so they will be fighting for a good result.”
City, who are 13.00 to win the Grand Final, can’t now finish in the top four, so if they do qualify for the finals they will have to play away from home.
