Costa Rican Kenny Cunningham came off the bench to score twice and help Wellington Phoenix pull off a come-from-behind 3-2 win against Central Coast Mariners.

Wellington were 2-0 down with 25 minutes to go at Westpac Stadium before keeping alive their top-two ambitions with a deserved victory.

The home side conceded two poor goals in the opening 35 minutes and didn’t seem to have brought their shooting boots to the game. They managed 24 shots overall but lacked a cutting edge until the final quarter of the match.

Sydney FC are 2.50 to beat Wellington Phoenix, who are 2.50 with the draw 3.40.

Just when it looked like they would suffer a third consecutive home defeat, Ernie Merrick’s side broke their six-hour scoring drought.

Nathan Burns fed the ball in and Dutchman Roly Bonevacia placed the ball beyond the dive of Liam Reddy to spark their hopes of a comeback.

Cunningham, introduced just after the hour mark, drew Wellington level with 11 minutes to go when he chested the ball down after it rebounded off Nick Montgomery and bagged his first goal of the season.

Having got off the mark in the penultimate match of the campaign, he went one better with the winner five minutes into injury time.

The Phoenix had already missed two injury-time chances and seemed destined to have to settle for a draw before Bonevacia found Cunningham who side-footed past the advancing Reddy.

Central Coast, in their first game since Tony Walmsley was appointed permanent head coach, drew first blood on 11 minutes when Fitzgerald latched onto Isaka Cernak’s pass and beat keeper Glen Moss at his near post.

They doubled their lead 10 minutes before the break, Eddy Bosnar’s free-kick going through the wall and in despite Moss getting a hand to the shot.

The Phoenix are 10.00 to beat Sydney FC 1-0.
