Three goals in 15 second-half minutes sentenced Brisbane Roar to a costly 3-1 Asian Champions League defeat away to Suwon Bluewings.

The defending A-League champions now need a victory against unbeaten Group G leaders Beijing Guoan in a fortnight to stand any chance of qualifying for the knock-out phase.

The second qualification spot in the group is between Brisbane and Bluewings, and after being held 3-3 at home by the South Koreans in their last match, Frans Thijssen’s side badly needed a positive result in Suwon.

But after holding out until six minutes after half-time, the Roar were put to the sword by the home side and found themselves 3-0 down after 65 minutes before Luke DeVere netted a consolation goal.

Chances were limited in the first half, Roar keeper Jamie Young making saves from a Seo Jung-Jin header and a close-range effort from Lee Sang-Ho.

Suwon coach Seo Jung-Won sent on Kwon Chang-hoon at the break, and saw the substitute break the deadlock soon afterwards.

Corey Brown’s misplaced pass was cut out by Jong Tae-Se and Kwon powered forward before slotting past Young.

Brisbane, who are 26.00 to win the A-League Grand Final, missed a chance to level straight away, when Brandon Borrello missed the target after running on to Andrija Kaludjerovic’s knockdown.

The home side scored their second goal just before the hour mark, South Korea international Seo Jung-Jin cutting inside before beating Young at his near post.

And six minutes later Thijssen’s side conceded again, Yeom Ki-hun curling a free-kick into the top corner of the net.

Brisbane pulled a goal back 14 minutes from time when Thomas Broich’s curling free-kick was headed home by DeVere.
The result means regardless of how the Roar fare in their final two matches, they will be eliminated if Suwon – who travel to bottom side Urawa Red Diamonds in a fortnight – win either of theirs.

The Roar are 5.50 to win their next A-League match against Adelaide United, who are 1.57 with the draw 4.00.
