Cam Watson has become the third player inside a week to sign for Newcastle Jets, as last season’s wooden spoon side continue to bolster their squad for 2015/16.

Watson was released by Adelaide United at the end of last term having played 129 games over five years for the Reds. Newcastle, who are 26.00 to win the Grand Final, have signed the 28-year-old on a one-year deal after he passed his medical on Thursday.

Watson has played at two youth levels for Australia and started his senior career in Holland with VVV-Venlo before returning home to join hometown club Melbourne Knights in 2007. His signing follows the recruitment of Western Sydney Wanderers pair Mateo Poljak and Labinot Haliti earlier in the week.

A clear benefit for us is that Cameron can play not only a midfield role.

Jets coach Scott Miller said Watson, who can play in midfield or defence, brought sound A-League experience to the club.

“A clear benefit for us is that Cameron can play not only a midfield role, but also provide cover in the right fullback position,” added the coach. “Naturally this adds depth to our squad and will help increase competition for places in the team.

“We view Cameron as a combative but also clever player who at 28 still has time some of his best years as a professional ahead of him.”

Watson said he was excited by the new challenge, as he was joining the club during its rebuilding phase.

He added: “In terms of my style of play, I have always prided myself on getting up and down the field and helping out in defence and attack. Newcastle was always a tough place to come and play while I was with Adelaide, so I am looking forward to helping the team make sure that whenever we play we make our members proud.”

The Jets are 3.60 to win their first match of the A-League season against Wellington Phoenix, who are 1.83 with the draw 3.75.
