Craig Goodwin has praised Adelaide United coach Josep Gombau for instilling confidence in his side this season.
The Reds are just 90 minutes away from a Grand Final appearance, and won’t feel daunted by travelling to Sydney FC for Saturday’s semi-final. They finished just four points behind the Sky Blues in the final A-League table, with both teams winning 14 games.
It’s barely a month since United, who are 5.50 to win the Grand Final, went to Sydney and won 1-0 thanks to Awer Mabil’s late goal.
Defender/winger Goodwin, who has scored five goals and bagged two assists for Adelaide this term, has only missed one game all season.
He scored a stunning free-kick last weekend to help Gombau’s side overcome Brisbane Roar in their elimination final.
The 23-year-old said: “We have had a fantastic season and hopefully we can start again against Sydney and go one step further to the Grand Final.”
Speaking of the club’s Spanish coach, Goodwin said: “I find he definitely gives me a lot of confidence and I would say it’s the same for all the other boys and the younger ones in the team.
“This year has been a good year for me and I’ve been able to be part of some of the great play. We do play some amazing football at times; just being able to play in a side that plays some of the best football competition is great.”
Goodwin’s move from Newcastle Jets last year has worked out perfectly for him – his former club have had a season of struggle that eventually saw them pick up the wooden spoon.
The two-cap Socceroo feels Adelaide have a good chance of beating Sydney, providing they bring their A-game to Allianz Stadium.
United are 3.00 to beat Sydney FC, who are 2.25 with the draw 3.50.
