Ending the regular season with a morale-boosting victory is a must for Adelaide United, says defender Craig Goodwin.
The Reds, who are 7.00 to win the Grand Final, have seen their premiership challenge fade away in recent weeks, after a spell of 10 points from a possible 12 had put them in great shape.
Consecutive defeats in their last two games, at home to Brisbane Roar and away against Western Sydney, have left them out of the running for a top-two finish.
A third loss in a row, at home to Melbourne City on Saturday, would be a major psychological blow ahead of their finals campaign, Goodwin admits.
The Reds led 1-0 against Wanderers before succumbing to two second-half goals after defender Nigel Boogaard was sent off.
“Obviously we are disappointed not to get a first or second spot but overall we are in a good position, we get a home finals game but firstly we need to concentrate on the game this week and then the finals ahead,” said Goodwin.
“We are playing well as a team but still aren’t taking the chances that we create. In terms of results we haven’t been the best as of late, but we just have to regroup and be ready for the coming fixtures.”
Boogaard will be missing through suspension for the City clash but he, along with the injured Marcelo Carrusca and Awer Mabil, will be available for the first week of the finals when they will host either City or Brisbane.
“We need to take this game against Melbourne City very seriously, we can’t just go in and not really play for the result,” said Goodwin. “We have to try and get the three points, work on the game and just try to get some form going into the finals.”
United are 2.00 to beat Melbourne City, who are 3.60 with the draw 3.50.
