Ante Covic is looking to continue his career in the A-League.

Ante Covic insists his A-League days are not over, after being discarded by Western Sydney Wanderers.

The keeper, who turned 40 on Saturday, went from the penthouse to the doghouse inside six months.

His heroics in goal for Wanderers helped win them the Asian Champions League, as they beat Al-Hilal in the final last December. He had a double celebration, as he was named player of the tournament.

But coach Tony Popovic ruled him surplus to requirements at the end of the campaign, along with 12 other players let go at the end of a hugely disappointing season.

I still want to play at the top level, and, not beating around the bush here, I’m far and away good enough to be at the top level,

Covic says he has been in talks with other A-League clubs, and hopes to resolve his future soon.

“Which clubs, I’m not going to say, but there are discussions going on. If there was no potential here I would be looking at something else, but my focus is still solely on playing in the A-League,” he said.

The keeper admits his axing by Western Sydney, who are 13.00 to win the 2015-16 Grand Final, came as a huge shock to him, but he has no doubt he has the ability to continue his career.

“I still want to play at the top level, and, not beating around the bush here, I’m far and away good enough to be at the top level,” he added. “I’ve proved that and I’m not going to lower myself and say that time has now gone. I’m still up there with the best.”

The former Socceroo has had two spells in Europe, including playing 59 games for Swedish club Elfsborg before returning to the A-League with Melbourne Victory in 2011.

If no A-League deal pans out, he says he would consider looking overseas again.

“I’m not going to rule anything out, but at the same time I’m not going to go and do something that’s out of my comfort zone or not worthwhile,” he said.

Meanwhile, Australia are 1.16 to win their first 2018 World Cup qualifier against Kyrgyzstan, who are 11.00 with the draw 6.00.
