Newcastle Jets have made just their second signing of the pre-season by bringing in defender Lachlan Jackson from Brisbane Roar.

Jackson arrives after playing three senior games for the Roar in his maiden A-League campaign.

The 20-year-old scored against the Jets in their final match of last season, sentencing them to their 16th defeat of the campaign as they lost 2-1 at Suncorp Stadium.

I am looking forward to being part of the rebuild here in Newcastle and helping to establish the Jets as a strong competitor.

That proved to be Phil Stubbins’ final game in charge and new coach Scott Miller is busy rebuilding the squad ahead of 2015-16.

Jackson fills the club’s third slot for players 20 or under, alongside Radovan Pavicevic and Joshua Barresi. The left-sided central defender said he regarded the move to Newcastle as a good choice.

“Working with Scott and JP (Jean-Paul de Marigny) I think I can progress my career,” he added. “Towards the end of last season I got to make a few senior appearances for Brisbane, and in the game against Newcastle I think they saw something that they liked, which is encouraging.

“I am looking forward to being part of the rebuild here in Newcastle and helping to establish the Jets as a strong competitor.”

Miller said the Jets saw Jackson as a player with plenty of potential who would benefit from learning alongside experienced players like Daniel Mullen and Nigel Boogaard.

The Jets have signed him on a one-season contract but expect to see him develop into a regular A-League starter, he added.

“He’s exceptionally driven and demonstrates sound tactical awareness and composure in possession, which are desirable traits for our club and team,” said Miller.

The Jets’ only other signing so far is former Sydney FC man Themba Muata-Marlow, while keeper Mark Birighitti has also re-joined the club after a loan spell in Italy.

Newcastle are 3.60 to win their first game of the new league season against Wellington Phoenix, who are 1.83, with the draw 3.75.
