Western Sydney Wanderers have signed left-back Scott Jamieson, after he left Perth Glory by mutual consent last week.
Coach Tony Popovic reacted to the club’s hugely disappointing 2014-15 campaign by releasing 11 players at the end of the season and Jamieson is the first player to arrive at Wanderers ahead of the new season.
Popovic has also upgraded Australia U-20 defender Jonathan Aspropotamitis to a full A-League contract.
Jamieson, who has signed a two-year deal with Western Sydney, chose to exercise his right to leave Perth in the wake of the salary cap scandal that saw them excluded from the finals.
Though just four months into a two-year contract with the Glory, the 26-year-old defender opted to head back to his native east coast.
Western Sydney chief executive John Tsatsimas said: “The Wanderers aim to inspire and provide a pathway for the youth of Western Sydney and having another one of our own in the first team helps show them what is possible.
“Scott has had a standout season at Perth Glory and we’re delighted to have him on board. He can play anywhere on the left flank and will add strength to our defensive and attacking stocks.”
Aspropotamitis impressed after being brought into the struggling team last season at the age of 18, playing well enough to be selected for the U-20s for the first time.
Tsatsimas said: “He has done well and is further testament to our commitment to youth as one of five debutants from the youth team this season as well as one of eight current Young Socceroos at the Wanderers.”
Popovic has plenty of gaps to fill in his squad for next season after parting ways with the likes of goalkeeper Ante Covic – player of the tournament when they won the Asian Cup in 2014 – midfielders Jason Trifiro and Iacopo La Rocca and strikers Tomi Juric, Nikita Rukavytsya and Kerem Bulut.
Western Sydney are 13.00 to win the 2015/16 A-League Grand Final, with Perth 13.00 and Brisbane Roar 8.00.
