Marc Janko equalled an A-League record by scoring in his sixth consecutive match to give Sydney FC a 1-0 win away to Newcastle Jets.

The Austrian marquee striker netted midway through the second half after a mistake by the home defence, taking him to a league-leading 13 goals for the season.

The win took the Sky Blues, at least temporarily, up to second spot in the table with Graham Arnold’s side now the form team of the competition.

It was not their most impressive display of the season but they were worthy winners as they secured their fifth victory in their last six games and are now unbeaten since Boxing Day.

Sydney FC are 1.90 to win their next game against Brisbane Roar, who are 3.50 with the draw 3.50.

For the Jets, it was their 11th defeat in 20 games this term and they were again at fault at the back for the winning goal.

Defender Lee Ki-je was caught in possession midway deep in his own half and Janko was able to bear down on goal. Daniel Mullen attempted a last-gasp tackle but only succeeded in knocking the ball forward and Janko was able to beat wrong-footed keeper Ben Kennedy at his near post.

The Sky Blues were unlucky not to take the lead on the half-hour mark when Seb Ryall headed a Milos Dimitrijevic free-kick against the crossbar. Janko’s follow-up was deflected wide off Mullen, but though replays showed the ball had come off the defender’s arm Sydney were denied a penalty.

Janko was denied by a Kennedy block after Scott Neville’s attempted back-pass went straight to the striker. But he made amends for squandering that chance, his scoring streak equalling the mark set by Besart Berisha while he was with Brisbane Roar.

The Jets rarely looked like scoring, and have now gone 451 minutes without a goal in games against the Sky Blues.

Sydney FC are 3.75 to beat Brisbane Roar by a one-goal margin.
