Coach Phil Stubbins is adamant that Newcastle Jets are improving, after seeing them slump to an 11th defeat of the season.

The Jets lost 1-0 at home to Sydney FC, Marc Janko’s winner midway through the second half coming after a mistake by defender Lee Ki-je.

Stubbins’ side have become tighter at the back, with just six goals conceded in the past five games since they were thrashed 7-0 at Adelaide United in January.

We created some good opportunities but we just fell a little bit short.

But scoring goals remains a serious problem as they have managed only 16 in 20 games and Edson Montano is their leading scorer with just three this season.

The Jets did not overly trouble Sydney keeper Vedran Janjetovic at Hunter Stadium as they drew another blank, but Stubbins can see a marked improvement in their form.

“We created some good opportunities but we just fell a little bit short,” he said. “The boys out there gave it everything they’ve got. It was a shame in the manner we lost the game in the goal we gave away but there was certainly some parity in that contest.

“The first half we played some very good football and we’re growing. That’s very evident and if people can’t see that we’re moving in the right way then they are watching a different game.”

Newcastle are 5.50 to win their next game against Melbourne City, who are 1.53 with the draw 3.75.

Newly-appointed CEO Mitchell Murphy has said the club aim to keep South Korean defender Lee, one of their transfer window signings, beyond this season.

It was Lee’s error at the back, though, that proved costly against the Sky Blues as he was dispossessed by Janko who raced away to beat keeper Ben Kennedy at his near post.

Stubbins admits Newcastle have fallen short of their expectations this season but says it will be a different story in 2015-16.

The Jets are 7.50 to beat Melbourne City by a one-goal margin.
