Adelaide United have signed former Western Sydney Wanderers defender Iacopo La Rocca on a two-year deal.
The Italian was released by Wanderers at the end of last season, despite having been a success at the club.
He helped Tony Popovic’s side win the Asian Champions League last December, playing in both legs of the final against Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, who are 4.00 to win this year’s ACL.
I reckon we can win more trophies.
Iacopo La Rocca
La Rocca played five times for Western Sydney over their first three seasons in the A-League, scoring six goals. One of his goals came on the big stage, when he netted against Mexican side Cruz Azul in the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco.
United coach Josep Gombau said bringing in La Rocca was a significant move in the club’s bid to move to the next level next season.
The Reds won the inaugural FFA Cup last year and finished third in the A-League but lost 4-1 in the semi-finals to Sydney FC.
Gombau, whose side are 7.00 to win the A-League Grand Final, said: “Iacopo is a player who has extensive experience both here and internationally; he’s a proven winner and can also play in different positions. He brings a different dimension to our squad, which is something we were looking for.”
The 31-year-old, who has previously played his club football in Italy and Switzerland, said: “I decided to sign because Adelaide showed they really wanted me and I am very happy to sign for one of the strongest clubs in Australia and to be part of this group of players.”
La Rocca said Adelaide were the best footballing side in the country and added: “I reckon we can win more trophies. I believe my experience and a willingness to give my all for the team and coach at all times can help the team succeed.”
