Perth Glory reclaimed top spot in the A-League despite extending their win drought to seven games as they drew 1-1 away to Melbourne Victory.
Kenny Lowe’s team, having seen Wellington Phoenix go above them on goal difference earlier in the day by beating Adelaide United, earned a point at AAMI Park courtesy of Andy Keogh’s 10th goal of the season.
We got a good point here today against a very good Victory team.
Keogh hadn’t scored since the 3-3 draw at home to the Victory in January, and it was the assistant referee’s benefit of the doubt that allowed him to break that drought two minutes before half-time.
Michael Thwaite’s diagonal pass picked out the former Ireland international, who beat keeper Nathan Coe from close range.
Victory, who had attempted to play Keogh offside, were furious that the goal stood but TV replays suggested the striker was level with the last defender.
There was no doubt about the home side’s leveller on 64 minutes, full-back Daniel Georgievski smacking a shot past Danny Vukovic from the left side of the area after good work from Carl Valeri and Fahid Ben Khalfallah.
The home crowd who had been so incensed at Keogh’s goal, drew plenty of satisfaction from Mitch Nichols’ late sending-off in his first game back in Melbourne against his former teammates.
Nichols picked up a second yellow card in injury time to round off a match featuring seven bookings and 31 fouls.
The home side had almost all the best chances in the game, with Ben Khalfallah twice being denied by excellent saves from Vukovic and just missing with a 73rd-minute header after being set up by Valeri.
Keogh was pleased to come away with a point, saying: “We’ve been grinding out results even though we haven’t been playing as well as we had been but we got a good point here today against a very good Victory team.”
Perth are 2.30 to beat Wellington in their next game, with the Phoenix 3.10 and the draw 3.30.
