Perth Glory have agreed to release striker Jamie Maclaren, as the fallout from their salary cap problems continues.

Perth, having led the league for much of last season, were banned from the Finals Series and placed seventh in the table for breaching the salary cap.

The club agreed to release all contracted players who wanted to leave, apart from Maclaren.

The 21-year-old sought the help of the players’ union, Professional Footballers Australia, and now Perth have agreed to let him leave.

As far as my future is concerned, I don’t have any immediate plans.

Maclaren spent four years at Blackburn Rovers, who are 10.00 to be promoted from the Championship, without breaking into the first team. He then returned to his native Australia to sign a three-year deal with the Glory.

Last season was the best of his career as he scored 10 goals in 23 appearances across all competitions and earned the April nomination for the league’s young player of the year award.

Glory, who are 13.00 to win the Grand Final, said they had released the Melbourne-born player “to allow him to pursue alternate football opportunities”.

Maclaren, who scored nine goals in 17 games for Australia U-20, said: “I would like to thank the club and all the fans and members for their support over the past two years. I have many fond memories of WA and have enjoyed my time here.

“As far as my future is concerned, I don’t have any immediate plans, but I would like to wish the club the best of luck in the forthcoming campaign.”

Perth have lost a host of players since the end of last season, including Daniel De Silva who has moved to AC Roma.

Among other players to have moved on are Rostyn Griffiths, goalkeepers Jack Duncan and Danny Vukovic, Youssouf Hersi and Scott Jamieson.

Coach Kenny Lowe has so far brought in Antony Golec, Alex Grant and Jerrad Tyson ahead of the new campaign.
