New technical director Tony Walmsley is putting Central Coast Mariners’ fledgling partnership with Everton at the top of his priorities.
Walmsley, previously assistant coach to Graham Arnold at the Mariners, returned to the club last month after a spell recruiting players for Sheffield United’s Academy.
He admits the Gosford club have made mistakes with their own overseas player recruitment over the past year, and says signing the right players for next season and beyond is crucial.
I will work with Joe Royle on the identification of those with the best fit.
The Mariners brought in three players from overseas last year, signing former Ulsan Hyundai winger Kim Seung-Yong in February and both Hungarian midfielder Richard Vernes and IFK Goteborg striker Malic Mane on loan deals in pre-season.
Kim was released at the end of last year, a month after Mane’s loan was terminated, and Vernes has only played eight games.
Central Coast, who are 7.00 to finish in the top six, have signed a partnership with Everton that they hope will see some of the Premier League clubs Under-21 Development players arrive in Gosford on loan deals.
Walmsley, who aims to travel to meet his Everton opposite numbers before the end of the A-League season, said the partnership was about providing a quality loan environment for players.
“I will work with Joe Royle on the identification of those with the best fit; it has to work for both clubs,” he said. “The Mariners has been a success story for a decade. The imports this season didn’t work out, but we are forward looking.
“The challenge to uncover untapped talent is exciting and of course we have the Everton players to look forward to for next season.”
Central Coast are 3.20 to win their next match against Melbourne City, who are 2.25 with the draw 3.30.
Walmsley’s role won’t just be to recruit new players, and he added: “The start point is always your existing players and we need to communicate this to the current group so they understand how they can be successful under the new model.”
