Adelaide United need to rediscover their cutting edge up front to boost their premiership chances, says central defender Dylan McGowan.
The Reds have spent the entire season in the top four, but with two defeats in their past four games mean they have failed to take advantage of leaders Perth Glory’s patch of poor form.
While they are only three points behind the Glory, Josep Gombau’s men know that their place in the top four is no longer secure as fifth-placed Sydney FC trail them by just a point.
Taking chances has been our Achilles heel all season.
Few would have expected it after they thrashed Newcastle Jets 7-0 at the end of January, but Adelaide, who are 4.50 to win the Grand Final, have struggled for goals since then.
Twice in the past four matches they have taken the lead only to go on and lose – away to Central Coast last month and against Melbourne City in a 3-1 defeat last weekend.
“Taking chances has been our Achilles heel all season,” said McGowan. “I think last season we were a lot freer scoring but were conceding more at the back but if we took majority of our chances we would definitely be a lot higher in the league than what we have done.
“Up until this round we were the best defensive team in the league but we need to start taking our chances if we want to make a serious run at this (finals).”
United were the leading scorers in the league last season, with 45, and had the second-best goal difference even though they finished sixth in the table.
They need to bounce back this weekend when they travel to Lower Hutt to take on Wellington Phoenix where they are 2.60.
Wellington are level on points with the Reds and just one behind on goal difference after beating Melbourne Victory at the weekend. The Phoenix beat Adelaide 3-1 at Coopers Stadium in December.
McGowan said: “We will hopefully work hard this week on the track and make things right and hopefully take three points against Wellington. All we can do is try and keep winning our games and it’s out of our hands now we have got to just win as many as we can and put pressure on the team above us.”
