Brisbane Roar drew praise from Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers after the Reds’ 2-1 victory in their friendly at Suncorp Stadium.
Liverpool had to come from behind to take the spoils, with new signing James Milner scoring the winner in front of nearly 50,000 fans.
John Aloisi’s first game in charge drew positive feedback from Rodgers, and the Roar coach was also happy with what he saw from his team’s opening pre-season match.
“It’s a real mark of Australian football, the improvements that they’re making,” said Rodgers. “The structure you have in the federation… you see a top level technical game from your team.”
Brisbane are 8.00 to win the A-League Grand Final in the 2015/16 season.

The home side, in the strange position of having their fans hugely outnumbered by supporters of the opposition, took a shock lead on 17 minutes.
Brandon Borrello fed Dimi Petratos, who jinked past Martin Skrtel and fired past keeper Simon Mignolet from near the penalty spot. The lead lasted only nine minutes, though, with Adam Lallana equalising after brushing off defender Jack Hingert before curling a shot into the top corner.
The Reds made a host of changes and their fresh legs gave them an advantage over the rusty Roar, paving the way for Milner’s winner with 15 minutes left.
Milner found himself surrounded by defenders but slid the ball through the legs of acting skipper Jade North and then saw his scuffed shot deflected past keeper Jamie Young.
Aloisi said: “There were periods there where we played from one side to another and we opened up the Liverpool team.
“That’s the confidence they need to take out of it – if we can do it against a European side like that, one of the best sides in the Premier League, we should be able to do it against any A-League side.”
Western Sydney are 2.37 to beat Brisbane Roar, who are 2.75 with the draw 3.25, in the first game of the A-League season.
