Central Coast Mariners have told their all-time leading scorer Matt Simon he will be released at the end of the A-League season.
The 28-year-old has spent more than eight years with the Gosford club, netting 41 goals in his 148 games.
He has scored three goals in his eight league starts this season, making him the club’s joint-top scorer.
But the Mariners have told him his contract won’t be renewed, making him the second high-profile player to be approaching his final game with the club.
John Hutchinson, who holds Central Coast’s record for appearances, will hang up his boots at the end of the season but stay on as a coach.
Simon, who won the Premiership with the club in 2007-08, said: “The fans have been a huge part of why I always had plans to finish my career with this club. Unfortunately that won’t be.
“The club told me that I won’t fit into their plans for moving ahead next season.”
Simon joined the Mariners senior squad in 2006 and played 114 games for them first time around, before having a spell in South Korea with Jeonnam Dragons.
He returned to Gosford in May 2013, just after the Mariners had won the A-League championship.
The Sydney-born player played twice for Australia under Pim Verbeek in 2009 in qualifiers for the 2011 Asian Cup.
The Mariners have struggled this season, after finishing second and third in the table in the previous two campaigns.
They are virtually out of the running for the Finals Series and axed coach Phil Moss earlier this month, installing Tony Walmsley as interim coach until the end of the season with Hutchinson stepping up into a player/assistant coach role.
Central Coast are 2.80 to win their next game against Perth Glory, who are 2.50 with the draw 3.25.
