Sydney FC have parted ways with marquee striker Marc Janko, despite him winning the A-League’s Golden Boot.
The Austria international’s 16 goals made him the leading scorer in his first, and what will prove to be only, season with the Sky Blues.
Sydney signed him last year and hoped he would fill the shoes of Alessandro Del Piero, who had been their overseas marquee for the previous two seasons.
He more than adequately replaced the Italian, providing the cutting edge up front that the team had lacked before and helping them reach the Grand Final.
The club made him a one-year offer on the same $1.4 million terms, but Janko says they later withdrew the offer and left him feeling disappointed.
Coach Graham Arnold had spoken several times in the final weeks of the season about wanting to keep Janko.
But he said in a statement as Janko’s departure was confirmed that the striker would have missed a number of matches next season to play for Austria in the run-up to Euro 2016.
“Marc has done very well this season and we were happy with his performances and his contribution to Sydney FC,” said the coach. “However he will miss a number of A-league games next season due to international duty with no FIFA breaks in the A-League.
“Add that to our busier schedule, including Asian Champions League commitments and after lengthy consideration we have come to this decision.”
Janko posted on Twitter that the Sky Blues had made him an offer “a few weeks ago” that he was willing to accept.
He added: “Very surprisingly the club called today to inform me they are pulling back their offer… it’s very disappointing for me and my family how these things have been communicated and handled in terms of honesty and respect but I guess that’s football.”
Sydney FC are 5.00 to win the 2015-16 Grand Final and Melbourne City are 9.00.
