Western Sydney Wanderers have lost another of their top players, with Socceroos ace Matthew Spiranovic moving to Hangzhou Greentown.
The central defender helped Wanderers reach the A-League Grand Final in the first of his two seasons with the club, and won the Asian Champions League with them last November.
He follows a succession of players out of door, becoming the 15th player to leave the club since the end of last season. Wanderers are 13.00 to win the Grand Final.
Spiranovic has played 27 times for Australia, including at last year’s World Cup, helping the Socceroos win the Asian Cup on home soil in January.
Wanderers CEO John Tsatsimas said: “Matthew’s time at the Wanderers saw our club reach the heights in both the domestic competition and AFC Champions League and he will be fondly remembered by the Wanderers faithful.”
He will be fondly remembered by the Wanderers faithful.
Spiranovic came back to Australia in 2013 to sign for Western Sydney ahead of their second A-League campaign, having previously played for German side FC Nurnberg and had stints in Asia with Urawa Red Diamonds and Al-Arabi.
The 27-year-old said: “I had never played professionally in Australia prior to coming to the Wanderers, so to experience the best that football can offer in terms of success and coaching and helping me achieve my peak as a footballer while being here, after playing in countries like Germany and Japan, is something that I will never forget.”
He joins a Hangzhou side who are sitting just two places above the relegation zone in the China Super League after a run of four defeats in five games.
Western Sydney are 2.37 to win their first match of the A-League season against Brisbane Roar, who are 2.75 with the draw 3.25.
Meanwhile, Wellington Phoenix have signed former Sydney FC striker Blake Powell on a one-year deal.
Powell scored three goals in 18 games for the Sky Blues over two seasons before leaving last year, and has since been with New South Wales NPL club APIA Leichhardt.
