Sydney FC continued their amazing away record as they held off Newcastle Jets’ rally to win 4-3 at Hunter Stadium.
The Sky Blues have won nine of their away games this season and drawn the other four – before the trip to Newcastle they had only conceded 10 goals in their 12 matches on the road.
Ironically they could end up victims of their own success. Sydney have been vulnerable at home, where they have lost five times, but finishing in the top two would mean they host a semi-final.
Sydney FC are 2.50 to win their next game against Wellington Phoenix, who are 2.50 with the draw 3.40.
The second half of the game produced six goals as the Sky Blues came out determined to turn things round after trailing 1-0 at the break.
Enver Alivodic’s 22nd-minute goal was well worked, Edson Montano’s excellent through-ball giving him the chance to lob over advancing keeper Vedran Janjetovic.
The visitors equalised four minutes into the second half when defender Rhyan Grant split the defence with a pass that set up skipper Alex Brosque to slot the ball past keeper Ben Kennedy.
And Graham Arnold’s side went in front just two minutes later when Bernie Ibini followed up his shot that Kennedy could only parry and netted the rebound with the outside of his right foot.
Brosque made it 3-1 soon after, scoring a brace for the second game in a row as he glanced his header home from Alex Gersbach’s cross.
The Jets showed spirit to score twice in nine minutes and get back on level terms, first when Andrew Hoole’s cross was bundled home by Edson Montano from close range.
Hoole, who will join Sydney at the end of the season, equalised from the penalty spot after being fouled by Gersbach.
Sydney, needing the victory to strengthen their bid for a top-two finish, scored the winner just four minutes later. Shane Smeltz climbed high at the far post to head a cross back across goal for substitute Robert Stambolziev to score his first goal for the club from close range.
Sydney FC are 10.00 to beat Wellington Phoenix 1-0.
