Newcastle Jets owner Nathan Tinkler is ready to back embattled coach Phil Stubbins by funding the signing of a marquee striker for next season.
Tinkler remains as convinced as Stubbins that the coach is the right man to turn the club’s fortunes around.
He came down decisively on Stubbins’ side when members of the playing group lost their faith in him in the middle of the season, releasing five players on the same day as well as three coaches.
The Jets have only won two of their 24 games under the English coach this season and are bottom of the table, but the club owner isn’t pointing the finger in his direction.
Speaking ahead of the trip to Melbourne Victory, where the Jets are 9.00, Tinkler said: “How many goals has Phil Stubbins missed? It is not his fault and no-one is working harder to fix this. You would swear we had a squad everyone is envious of.”
The Jets will miss out on the Finals Series for a fifth consecutive season, and their owner is ready to dig deep to help boost the squad for 2015-16.
He has seen what a difference a top-quality international marquee striker can make, with Sydney FC having brought in Austrian ace Marc Janko and been rewarded with a league-leading 16 goals.
“We don’t have $1.4 million for Janko but I hope we can find something (a striker) similar,” said Tinkler. “Not many other clubs have room under the cap.
“We have plenty of roster spots and just have to be in the market for the right guys. Phil knew what he didn’t have and he knows what he needs; it will happen.”
Newcastle Jets are 10.00 to beat Melbourne Victory by a one-goal margin.
