Auckland City coach Ramon Tribulietx has confirmed he has been in discussions with defending A-League champions Brisbane Roar.

Frans Thijssen has been Roar’s interim coach since Mike Mulvey – who won the double last season – was sacked just six games into the current campaign. But reports suggest the Dutchman is unlikely to be retained in the top job for 2015-16, and Tribulietx looks to be a leading candidate to take over.

The Roar, who are 21.00 to win the Grand Final, will not make any statement about the coaching position until the end of their season – they face Adelaide United next weekend in an elimination final.

Yes, Brisbane have spoken to me but we only spoke about football, if I can say it like that.

Tribulietx admitted, after steering Auckland to a record-equalling fifth Oceania Champions League success in Fiji on Sunday, that he had been in contact with Brisbane.

The 42-year-old Spaniard’s contract with Auckland has expired and he confirmed he is hungry to test himself at a higher level after six years in New Zealand.

“Yes, Brisbane have spoken to me but we only spoke about football, if I can say it like that,” he said. “The A-League is a great competition but I don’t know what’s going to happen with my future; time will tell. I am an ambitious coach … I have always said that and if one day I have the opportunity to progress I will definitely consider it.

“I’ve been hearing for a while about the interest (from Brisbane) and it’s been my aim for a long time to coach at the highest level possible.”

The Barcelona-born coach helped Auckland City finish third at last December’s FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco as they won three games including beating CONCACAF champion Cruz Azul.

Brisbane, won finished sixth in the table due to Perth Glory being banned from the finals, will face Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Friday. The Roar won 3-2 in Adelaide in their final away match of the regular season on 11th April.

The Roar are 4.00 to beat Adelaide, who are 1.83 with the draw 3.75.
