John van’t Schip felt his sides attitude was poor against Perth.

Melbourne City coach John van ‘t Schip accused his side of not wanting to win badly enough, after they lost 3-1 to Perth Glory.

City were already assured of a place in the finals, and a fifth-place finish, before the match but their display at nib Stadium was not what the coach wanted as they prepare for the play-offs.

City had 11 shots on target to Perth’s five, and were denied in the first half by a series of excellent saves from keeper Danny Vukovic.

The Dutch coach, though, felt his team should have been able to turn those chances into goals against a Glory side still reeling from Football Federation Australia’s decision to ban them from the Finals Series for breaching the league’s salary cap.

As City will face nothing but away matches in the finals however deep they go, their seventh defeat of the season away from home was not encouraging.

“If the mindset is not good, even if you get 11 or 12 opportunities, the goal is not going to go in,” said van ‘t Schip, whose side are 15.00 to win the Grand Final.

“We have to change our mindset because this was not play-offs worthy if you approach a game like this. That’s something we will talk about with the players.”

He added: “In football and in life, if you don’t get the details right things are not going to happen and that was the case today. We didn’t want it bad enough.”

The City coach felt his team were “too casual” after half-time, which was particularly costly as they had just lost Paulo Retre to a red card in the final minute of the first half.

Aaron Mooy’s superb free-kick brought them level at 1-1 seven minutes after the break but Jamie Maclaren, who had put the home side in front, scored twice more to give Perth the points.

Van ‘t Schip will have Kew Jaliens and Jacob Melling back for Saturday’s away game against Adelaide United, where City are 3.70, after the duo were suspended in Perth.
