Leigh Broxham believes Melbourne Victory have the same ingredients for success in place as when they won their two A-League doubles.
The 27-year-old midfielder was a part of the squad in both 2006-07 and against two years later when the club won both the Premiership and Championship.
They are handily placed to take out their third Premiership this season, sitting a point behind leaders Wellington Phoenix with a game in hand.
The trip to Westpac Stadium this weekend, where they are 2.80 to win, gives them the chance to take over at the top – a place they’ve not occupied since round four – and leave their rivals having to catch them.
Victory, who are 3.75 to win the Grand Final, haven’t won any silverware in six years, but the memories of their successes are still fresh with Broxham and he sees plenty of parallels with the current squad.
“I think the mood is similar this year,” he said. “A big part of successful teams is that you can rely on the whole squad, and you only have to look at last weekend. We had a couple of young boys [George Howard and Thomas Deng] on the bench and one [Howard] came on and made his debut.”
Broxham says the squad is competitive and the players who are not playing push those in the side. There is plenty of character in the squad, he believes, and keeping good morale around the team is important.
He added: “It was the same in the Championship teams. Those who weren’t playing kept everyone on their toes.
“You obviously have to have the talent there and the right structures too, which we have. But the attitude of everyone is important, and it is spot-on at the moment.”
