Western Sydney Wanderers have signed experienced Spanish midfielder Andreu on a two-year deal.

The 32-year-old spent 12 years in the Barcelona system, playing for their C and B teams before joining Sporting Gijon in 2005.

We’re excited to add this sort of football pedigree to the playing squad.

His travels have taken him to Poland, New Zealand and Georgia to play his club football, and he arrives in Sydney having spent the past two seasons back in Spain with Racing Santander.

He had a guest stint with Auckland City in 2011 that saw him play twice at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Andreu’s signing comes under Wanderers’ salary cap, meaning they can still bring in an overseas visa player.

Coach Tony Popovic has parted company with 11 players since the end of last season, including four who played in their Asian Champions League triumph in Riyadh just seven months ago – Antony Golec, Tomi Juric, Iacopo La Rocca and Ante Covic.

The club’s recruits during the off-season have been Scott Jamieson from Perth Glory, Andrew Redmayne from Melbourne City and former Newcastle Jets pair Jacob Pepper and Scott Neville.

Western Sydney CEO John Tsatsimas, whose club are 13.00 to win the Grand Final, said of Andreu: “[He] has spent time at clubs such as Barcelona and Malaga and we’re excited to add this sort of football pedigree to the playing squad.

“It is important to get players of the calibre of Andreu to add a significant backbone to our squad in the middle of the park. We look forward to welcoming Andreu to our club when he arrives for pre-season training in the coming weeks.”

Wanderers are looking to bounce back next season, after finishing next to bottom in the table in 2014-15 and failing to qualify from the Asian Champions League group stages.

Western Sydney are 2.37 to win their first game of the season against Brisbane Roar, who are 2.75 with the draw priced at 3.25.
