Patrick Bamford says he is keen to return to Chelsea next season and fight for a place in the first team.
The on-loan England U21 international has scored 19 goals in 41 appearances for Middlesbrough in the Championship this season.
Middlesbrough remain in contention for promotion to the top flight but having been named Championship Player of the Year on Sunday night, Bamford is keen to try his luck at the highest level.
I want to play for Chelsea, I hope I do get that chance and I think I can compete.
He feels he has done enough during a succession of loan spells to warrant a chance at Chelsea but he has warned he isn’t interested in warming the bench at Stamford Bridge.
Bamford says his dream has always been to make it at a top club like Chelsea.
“I want to play for Chelsea, I hope I do get that chance and I think I can compete,” he told Sky Sports.
“A lot of people said I left Nottingham Forest for the wrong reasons, but that wasn’t true. I wanted to play for a top team like Chelsea.”
Middlesbrough are now 6.50 to win the Championship this season following a vital win at fellow contenders Norwich that keeps them one point behind leaders Watford.
Bamford says it will be up to Chelsea to decide whether or not he is worth a place in the squad for next season.
“After two years regularly playing out on loan, going back and sitting on the bench wouldn’t really help me.
“So it’s down to those at the top at Chelsea to decide what will be the best for my career and what to do next year.”
Middlesbrough are 1.72 to be promoted to the top flight this season, which could open up the possibility of Bamford playing Premier League football with Aitor Karanka’s team.
