Wigan sacked Malky Mackay on Monday.

New Wigan boss Gary Caldwell says he is ready for the challenge of managing the Latics, despite becoming the football league’s youngest manager.

Caldwell, 32, was a surprise choice to replace Malky Mackay who was sacked on Monday with Wigan second from bottom in the Championship and staring at relegation into League One.

The former central defender said he hopes to bring passion and desire to the job and, having lifted the FA Cup as captain of the club just two years ago, he wants to bring back the good times to the DW Stadium.

“I believe in desire and passion and that is something that I want to bring to management. It’s a chance to do something great with this club and take it back to where it should be,” he said in his first press conference as boss.

Wigan are eight points from safety in the Championship with only five games remaining in their season. They have managed only eight victories in 41 league outings to date.

Despite stating he wants to put his own mark on how things work at the club, Caldwell is targeting results in the short term.

“You want to put your own stamp on the club and I will try and do that from day one. I want to go in and set a positive tone and start winning games as quick as we can,” he said.

His first opportunity to do so comes on Friday night when Wigan head to Craven Cottage to face a Fulham team just eight points ahead of them in the table.

Wigan are 3.40 to win, with Fulham 2.10 and the draw 3.40.

Caldwell conceded it would take a miraculous escape for Wigan to avoid relegation but he is not giving up just yet.

“I’m positive he will get a reaction from the lads and if you can win two on the bounce and get some momentum then you just never know,” he said.
