Reading boss Steve Clarke hailed the signing of goalkeeper Jonathan Bond and stressed that they aim to help him “reach the very top”.
Clarke has been busy rebuilding his squad at the Madejski Stadium as he attempts to turn the Royals into a team that is capable of challenging for promotion to the Premier League next season following a disappointing 19th-placed finish in the Championship last term.
Jonathan is at the stage of his career where he needs a new challenge and the opportunity to establish himself as first-choice goalkeeper.
The former West Brom head coach has already brought in Orlando Sa, Stephen Quinn and Paul McShane so the arrival of Bond is his fourth signing in the past week.
The 22-year-old England Under-21 international spent last season as understudy to Heurelho Gomes at Watford as they secured automatic promotion to the Premier League.
But Clarke is looking for Bond to play a bigger part in the Royals emulating the Hornets and returning to the top-flight in this coming campaign.
He said on the Reading official website: “I’m delighted we’ve managed to secure the signature of one of English football’s brightest young goalkeepers.
“Jonathan is at the stage of his career where he needs a new challenge and the opportunity to establish himself as first-choice goalkeeper.
“He has all the attributes needed to reach the very top and, with the help of (new goalkeeping coach) Dave Beasant, it’s our aim to get him there.”
The Royals are 34.00 to win the Championship outright in 2015-16 and are 12.00 to win promotion.
