Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka has called on the club’s fans to hold their nerve as the Championship promotion race reaches its climax.

Boro moved to the top of the table and are now 1.44 to be promoted this season after edging to a 1-0 victory against Wigan Athletic, 1.22 to be relegated, on Good Friday.

“The Wigan game reminded me of when we played Bolton three or four weeks ago,” Karanka said.

“I don’t know how many chances we had to score the second goal, but we didn’t and we finished the game having to deal with a lot of long balls and set-pieces.

“If you look at the table now, it’s different. It’s a tough league. I want to ask the fans for their encouragement for the last three home games.”

Boro face Watford at Vicarage Road on Easter Monday in a key promotion six-pointer. The Hornets can be backed at 1.83 to be promoted from the Championship this term.
