Aitor Karanka has hinted that Mustapha Carayol could be handed the chance to shine in Friday’s Championship play-off first leg against Brentford.
The 26-year-old winger has yet to play for Boro this season, but did make five appearances for Brighton during his recent loan spell on the south coast.
Carayol was left on the substitutes’ bench for last weekend’s goalless draw against the Seagulls but could have a role to play against the Bees, in a match Boro are 13.00 to win 2-0.
“It was difficult to put Muzzy on against Brighton because the game was difficult. We didn’t feel comfortable so it was difficult to achieve our objective,” said Karanka.
“On the day I preferred to put Adam Reach on because he knows the team and knows how we have been playing. It’s not a problem, we have another two games so let’s see what will happen with Muzzy.”
Last month Carayol signed a two-year extension to his contract at the Riverside Stadium. He has been sidelined for 13 months with a cruciate ligament injury but has scored 12 times in 54 appearances for Boro since moving to Teesside from Bristol Rovers in August 2012.
Middlesbrough can be backed at 3.40 to be promoted from the Championship this season while Brentford are available at 4.50 to go up.
