Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy is convinced that Daryl Murphy will still be at Portman Road when the new season gets underway in just over three weeks’ time.

The 32-year-old former Sunderland and Celtic striker found the net 27 times in the Championship last season as McCarthy’s side reached the play-offs, where they were beaten by local rivals Norwich City, 2.10 to be relegated from the Premier League in 2015/16.

Murphy, who has found the net 40 times in 89 league appearances for Ipswich following his switch from Celtic two years ago, has been linked with Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday, but McCarthy insists the player is going nowhere.

The former Republic of Ireland, Wolves and Sunderland manager said: “I think first and foremost he wants to stay, he loves it here. I know there are other mitigating factors which can put a spanner in the works from time to time, but I think we’ll have him at the start of the season.”

We all love him. So, let’s hope it does happen and he stays.

Murphy signed a new deal with Ipswich 12 months ago, and McCarthy added: “I do feel that we’ve helped nurture his career, and it’s in his latter years, the best part of his career – 27 goals was his best haul.

“And I think he enjoys it here. He’s got the number nine on his back, he’s got good mates here, I think his family are settled here and he loves the club. And the feeling’s mutual, we all love him. So, let’s hope it does happen and he stays.”

Middlesbrough had a £4.5million offer for Murphy turned down last month, while Cardiff City and Norwich City, as well as Sheffield Wednesday, are also believed to be keen to land the Republic of Ireland international.

Ipswich are 9.00 to be promoted from the Championship in the 2015/16 campaign and 3.40 to beat Brentford in their opening game of the season on 8th August.
