Paul Clement is determined to guide Derby County to promotion next season after being named as the Rams’ new head coach.
The 43-year-old, who left Real Madrid last week, has signed a three-year deal with County and succeeds Steve McClaren who parted company with the club in May after failing to guide them to the Championship play-offs.
Clement has worked as Carlo Ancelotti’s number two at Chelsea, Paris St Germain and Real Madrid in the last six years, but thinks now is the right time to see if he can be a successful manager in his own right.
I want to take this club forward and into the Premier League.
He said: “Becoming a head coach is something that I’ve thought about for quite some time now. I’ve had a wonderful experience in the last six years working as an assistant to Carlo Ancelotti but I really felt that it was my time now to go it alone and be a number one in my own right.
“The objective is clear; I want to take this club forward and into the Premier League, which I hope I can help achieve with my skills; I’m really up for the challenge.
“The team has done well in the last few years and come close to achieving promotion. We’ll be looking for that bit extra now to get us there. The basics are there and that’s part of my decision to come to the club.”
Derby are 3.75 to be promoted from the Championship next season, while Nottingham Forest can be backed at 6.50 and Burnley at 5.50.
