Sunderland boss Dick Advocaat believes he has made a quality addition to his squad after bringing in Jeremain Lens from Dynamo Kiev.

After performing a U-turn over his decision to quit the Black Cats at the end of last season, signing a one-year deal instead, Advocaat made getting Lens on board his top priority.

The Dutch duo know each other well having previously worked together at AZ Alkmaar and PSV Eindhoven, with Advocaat firm in his belief that Lens can provide the attacking impetuous that Sunderland were so badly lacking at times last season.

Only Burnley scored fewer goals than Sunderland in the Premier League last term and Lens will be charged with making sure the Wearsiders get on the scoresheet more often.

The Netherlands international can play up front or on either flank and Advocaat is confident he will be a success in England.

“We have signed an international player and I am delighted to welcome him to Sunderland,” said Advocaat. “He is a very well-known player in Europe and has played over 30 games for the Dutch national side, which shows his calibre.

“I have worked with him twice already, at PSV and AZ, so I know him well. He is fast and he has scored goals everywhere he has played, so that will help the team.”

Lens joins Sunderland on a four-year deal after two years with Dynamo Kiev and is set to fly out to the United States to meet up with the rest of the squad on their pre-season tour in the coming days.

Despite narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Lens believes Sunderland have a good squad and is looking forward to testing himself in the Premier League.

“I’m very happy to be a Sunderland player. I think it is a good club, and it is a great step for me to play in the Premier League,” said Lens.

“I followed the team last season following the arrival of Dick Advocaat, and we have a good team, so as I said I’m really happy to be here.”

The Black Cats are 3.00 to be relegated this season, while they can be backed at 1.12 to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League.
