Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger believes Monday’s opponents Swansea were fortunate to come away from the Emirates Stadium with all three points.

The Gunners had been looking to extend an 11-match unbeaten run and move a step closer to automatic Champions League qualification with a win over the Swans, who themselves are chasing European qualification.

However, Wenger’s men were left frustrated as the Welsh side packed their midfield, stopping Arsenal from getting any rhythm into their play.

When they did get a sight of goal they found former Gunners shot stopper Lukasz Fabianski in inspired form.

With his goalkeeper standing firm, Bafetimbi Gomis was able to secure a first league double over Arsenal since the 1981-82 season with his header five minutes from full-time, the Frenchman having also scored the winner when the two sides met at the Liberty Stadium in November.

After the game, Wenger said he felt the 1-0 scoreline was unjust due to his team having dominated the match against a side who he claims were only interested in defending for the most part.

“We were a bit unlucky with the goal. There are a lot of positives. This kind of game you play 20 times and win 19 times,” said the French coach.

“[We were] unlucky against a team who refused to play completely and just defended.

“I cannot say they played a lot tonight. They go home but I don’t know how many passes they made.”

The result means Manchester United could overtake Arsenal and move into the last automatic Champions League qualification spot, with the team who finishes fourth facing a play-off to make it in to the competition.

The two sides meet on Sunday, with United 2.40 for the win, while Arsenal are 3.00 and the draw 3.40.

Wenger is eager to prove Monday’s loss was just a blip by producing a solid display at Old Trafford.

“It is crucial to show this was an accident,” Wenger said.
