Steve Bruce says his Hull City side have to take their chances against Manchester United next weekend and hope that they can pull off a last-gasp escape from relegation.
The Tigers lost 2-0 at Tottenham on Saturday to leave themselves facing a must-win clash with United at the KC Stadium, with manager Bruce aware that a victory might still not be enough to rescue the situation.
He said after the loss at White Hart Lane on Saturday: “We have to believe we can beat Manchester United next week. We have a chance, is there one final twist? Can we upset the apple cart? Let’s hope we can do it.”
We have to believe we can beat Manchester United next week.
Meanwhile, Bruce was pleased with the overall performance of his side against Spurs, seeing a massive improvement from the 1-0 home loss to Burnley a week earlier, but also admitted that City must be more ruthless in front of goal.
He added: “The team and their response has been magnificent and I couldn’t have asked for anything more. I couldn’t have asked for them to play any better after the woeful performance last week.
“The frustration is how we produced what we produced last week and what we produced today.
“The reason we’re in the bottom three is pretty evident. We’ve had five or six really glorious opportunities and at this level you’ve got to take them.”
Hull are now 1.20 to be relegated, with Newcastle United 8.00 and Sunderland 10.00.
