John Carver has raised a few eyebrows by suggesting that he is the best coach in the Premier League even though his Newcastle United side have lost their last eight games.

Since replacing Alan Pardew in the Newcastle hot-seat just over four months ago, his side have taken only nine points from a possible 48.

The 50-year-old’s side are only two points above the drop-zone with three games left, and are 6.50 to be relegated this season, while they are 1.12 to beat the drop. Sunderland can be backed at 1.66 to be relegated to the Championship.

They never asked me to resign. I knew I was in this for the next three games.

“I still think I’m the best coach in the Premier League,” said Carver. “If I have the right tools I can do the job. I’m doing the job to the best of my ability.”

Newcastle’s last three matches are against West Brom, QPR and West Ham.

“I never offered to resign, walk away,” added Carver. “Once I had a conversation with [managing director] Lee Charnley, I knew what my position was. They never asked me to resign. I knew I was in this for the next three games.”
