Newcastle United boss John Carver has admitted that his side now face a ‘do-or-die clash’ with West Ham next weekend, as they aim to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
The Magpies missed a chance to make themselves safe as they crashed 2-1 at already-relegated Queens Park Rangers pn Saturday.
There’s one game left and it’s a do-or-die situation.
However, they were boosted in their survival bid by Hull City losing 2-0 at Spurs, meaning that a draw on the final day of the season at home to the Hammers would almost certainly be enough to stay up.
Carver is though well aware of the pressure which will be on his players when they run out at St James’ Park next Sunday, as he told reporters: “There’s one game left and it’s a do-or-die situation.
“We have to manage the pressure this week, focus and keep out of media spotlight.
“We’ve talked about some games in the last three, four weeks being the biggest and next week against West Ham is one of them.”
Meanwhile, Carver is hoping that the Geordie faithful will all pull together for what promises to be a tense 90 minutes next weekend, adding: “I want the same atmosphere we had against West Brom a fortnight ago, because it could be the fans who actually get us across the line and keep our Premier League status.
“That’s the way they were against West Brom and it made a difference to the team. If it can give us that extra five or ten per cent to stay in the Premier League, then we need it.”
Newcastle are now 8.00 to be relegated, with Hull 1.20 and Sunderland 10.00.
