Jack Colback is determined to ensure Newcastle United do not become embroiled in another relegation battle next season.

The midfielder moved from Sunderland to St James’ Park last summer and accepts that he expected his new club to be much higher up the Premier League table.

However, it needed a final-day victory against West Ham United to ensure the Magpies would still be in the top-flight when the 2015/16 Premier League campaign gets underway in nine weeks’ time.

It’s a club with potential, and it deserves to be higher up the league than it has been.

Colback said Newcastle, who are set to name Steve McClaren as their new manager next week: “I still feel as though I can achieve everything I want to here.

“You have to be realistic, and we’re not going to be challenging for the league or anything like that any time soon, but you want to be able to compete in every game. That should be the bare minimum for a club like this.

“It’s a club with potential, and it deserves to be higher up the league than it has been. Hopefully, we can have a right good go next season.”

McClaren is 1.083 to be Newcastle’s next permanent manager, while United are 4.33 to be relegated from the Premier League in the 2015/16 season.
