Louis van Gaal is confident that David De Gea will still be at Old Trafford next season even if Manchester United fail to qualify for the Champions League.

The 24-year-old Spanish goalkeeper has just over 12 months to run on the five-year contract he signed when he moved to United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has been linked on several occasions this season with a transfer to Real Madrid.

However, Van Gaal remains sanguine about De Gea’s future and is pleased to have a shot-stopper of such quality in his squad.

De Gea has been outstanding this season for a United side that is 1.10 to finish in the top four and 2.40 to beat Manchester City next weekend.

Former Netherlands manager Van Gaal said: “I don’t think you have to ask that question to me. You have to ask David De Gea. We have a number of very good players.

“All the national coaches are confirming that because they are asking the players of ours. I don’t think that’s the problem.”
