Memphis Depay says linking up with Louis van Gaal was the deciding factor in his decision to join Manchester United this summer.
The former PSV Eindhoven player had big-money offers from around Europe, with Paris St Germain particularly keen to bring him to France, but he elected to join van Gaal at Old Trafford.
Depay says that his former Netherlands coach will make him a better player and that he feels he improves each time he takes to the training field with van Gaal.
“I don’t want to say he is a father figure. But he is a great manager. He can make players better.
“My experience when I went to the World Cup, and even before, was that I felt I was a better player every time I trained with him. I felt stronger. I felt fit,” Depay said.
“I am very hungry and I want to do everything better so I become a better player.”
Depay, 26.00 to be top scorer in the Premier League next season, says he wants to become a legend at Man United but first he must concentrate on starting on the right foot.
I felt I was a better player every time I trained with him. I felt stronger.
“I want to be a legend at some time. But the important thing to do is to focus on the next game… because I have to do my job in every game,” he added.
Depay agreed to join Man United once the Eredivisie season had concluded in May and he admits that once he had spoken to van Gaal there was only going to be one decision.
“When United came, my decision was made. After they came, I spoke with the manager and it was very clear for me,” said the 21-year-old.
Manchester United are 6.00 to win the Premier League next season with van Gaal’s Red Devils 1.25 to finish in the top four.
