Manchester City and Arsenal secured victories on Saturday to put pressure on league leaders Chelsea, who travel to Hull on Sunday.
City eased to a 3-0 victory over West Brom at the Etihad Stadium after Gareth McAuley was sent off for the visitors in the early stages in controversial circumstances.
McAuley was shown a red card after just 89 seconds but it was unclear as to whether referee Neil Swarbrick had shown the red card to the wrong man, as Craig Dawson had committed the initial foul on Wilfried Bony.
City made the extra man count as Bony grabbed his first goal for the club since a January move from Swansea, while Fernando doubled their lead five minutes before the break.
David Silva added a third in the second half as the defending champions moved to within three points of Chelsea, although Jose Mourinho’s men have two games in hand.
Arsenal appeared on course to stroll to victory at Newcastle after an early Olivier Giroud double but the hosts hit back through Moussa Sissoko in the early stages of the second half.
Newcastle pushed for an equaliser but the Gunners held on and they are now just four points behind Chelsea – but like City they have played two games more.
Spurs remain in the top four race after a 4-3 win over rock bottom Leicester at White Hart Lane as Harry Kane grabbed a hat trick.
The Foxes are seven points off safety and could find themselves cut further adrift if Sunderland avoid defeat against West Ham in the late kick off.
Southampton continued their recent resurgence with a 2-0 win over Burnley to leave the Clarets in the drop zone, while the Saints keep their European hopes alive.
Aston Villa remain in trouble after a 1-0 defeat at home to Swansea and Crystal Palace fought back from a goal down to secure an impressive 2-1 win at Stoke.
Chelsea are 1.44 to beat Hull on Sunday and Liverpool are 2.10 to see off Manchester United in a key fixture in the battle for a place in next season’s Champions League.
