Burnley boss Sean Dyche is determined to guide the Clarets to safety this season and prove his side’s doubters wrong.

Burnley were written off as relegation certainties before the season started and, when they began the campaign poorly, it was even suggested they could fail to win any of their 38 Premier League matches.

However, they have hit back at their critics by securing several notable victories and, with eight matches to go, have a realistic chance of avoiding the drop.

They face Tottenham on Sunday and can be backed at 3.50 to beat the side from the capital at Turf Moor. Burnley are 1.90 not to be relegated this season.

What’s the worst that can happen? Everyone thinks we have no chance.

“There was a freedom to play through last season even when the heat was turned up,” said Dyche. “I want that this season, I want the players to be aware of that.

“Some of that comes naturally – we were written off at the start, in the middle, still written off now, but most of the expectation is on the opposition. No one thought we could beat Manchester City.

“I just think if we can keep clear minds and that freedom to go out and play, then that’s a really good foundation to work from.”

Burnley are one point behind Sunderland and three behind both Aston Villa and Hull City.

“What’s the worst that can happen? Everyone thinks we have no chance,” Dyche added. “Maybe a little bit now, but not at the start of the season or Christmas. It’s really about us delivering performances.”
